Sen. Franken Speaks on Senate Floor in Support of Appeals Court Nominee Goodwin Liu
Yesterday, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate in support of the confirmation of Goodwin Liu, who has been nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. This afternoon, the Senate fell short of the 60 votes needed to proceed to a vote on Liu's nomination.
"As a member of the Judiciary Committee for the past two years, I've had the opportunity to meet with Professor Liu and vote on his nomination on several occasions. He is a singularly talented individual." said Sen. Franken. "A fundamentally decent man. And someone who will be a strong and impartial jurist."
Liu is the Associate Dean and Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He was nominated by President Obama to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals during the 111th Congress, but his nomination stalled due to opposition by Senate Republicans. Earlier this year, he was renominated and his nomination was reported out of the Judiciary Committee.
