Sen. Franken Successfully Fights to Protect Sugar Program that Supports Thousands of Minnesota Jobs
Votes to Stop Efforts to Kill Price Supports for Sugar Producers
Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) successfully fought to protect the federal sugar program by voting to stop Senate legislation that would have ended the program, which supports thousands of Minnesota jobs by ensuring a stable market and price for American sugar producers. Sen. Franken has long been an advocate of the sugar program.
"The U.S. sugar program supports thousands of Minnesota jobs and brings millions of dollars into communities all over the state," said Sen. Franken. "This policy is critically important to local economies in the Red River Valley, in southern Minnesota, and elsewhere in the state. I'm very pleased that we were able to save the sugar program with today's vote."
The amendment to the 2012 Farm Bill was introduced by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.). By a bipartisan vote of 50-46, the Senate voted to table the measure.
