Sen. Franken Again Successfully Fights to Protect Sugar Program

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) helped defeat legislation that would have undermined the sugar program, which supports thousands of Minnesota jobs by ensuring a stable market and price for American sugar producers. Sen. Franken has long been an advocate of the sugar program.

"The sugar program supports thousands of Minnesota jobs, is responsible for bringing millions of dollars into communities all over the state-especially in the Red River Valley-and has helped ensure stable sugar prices for American consumers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said that the program has run at zero cost to taxpayers over the last 10 years, and will likely run at zero cost for the next 10. I'm happy that I helped defeat a proposal today that would have undermined this critically important program."
