Sen. Franken's Minnesota Chippewa Distribution Act Moves Toward Senate Vote
After 13-Year Wait, Legislation Would Finally Distribute $28 Million Owed to Chippewa Tribe
Today, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee advanced legislation that would distribute $28 million in funds from a 1999 settlement to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and its members. The legislation now proceeds to the Senate floor for consideration by the full body.
"Thirteen years ago, the federal government agreed to this settlement, but the money has been siting idly in an account ever since," said Sen. Franken. "The Minnesota Chippewa Tribe has been waiting for this money for far too long, but today was an important step toward making things right. I'm going to continue to press my colleagues to pass this legislation and send it to the president for his signature."
Last October, Sen. Franken introduced the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Judgment Fund Distribution Act in the Senate. Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed companion legislation, which was approved today by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. The legislation would distribute $28 million - $20 million from a 1999 settlement plus interest - to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Each tribal member would receive $300 and the remaining funds would be split equally between the tribe's six bands, with each band receiving approximately $2.5 million.
