KEYC Mankato: Senator Franken Looks to Help Guard And Reservists Receive Benefits
Sen. Franken strongly believes that the men and women who serve our country make enormous sacrifices for us and deserve the full benefits they earned when they return home. Unfortunately, a number of members of the National Guard and Reservists, including Minnesotans that served in the hostile Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, were denied those hard-earned benefits when they returned from overseas-including military healthcare, education support, and retirement benefits.
That's why Senator Franken is working to right that wrong with new legislation he recently introduced in the Senate. The bill would ensure that all active duty members of the Guard can access health care, retirement, and GI Bill education. When our men and women in uniform return home, we need to do everything we can to ensure they have the resources to succeed.
KEYC Mankato reports:
"This should not be partisan. This is not just about Minnesota, but I want to make sure that our Guard and Reservists get the benefits that they deserve. They put everything on the line for us; they should get what they deserve."
Franken says he's taking the action after a bipartisan group of Senators failed to convince Defense Secretary Ash Carter to take the needed action to resolve the issue.
